The 100 most wealthiest people in Spain have a combined fortune amounting to almost 20% of the country’s GDP, new figures show.
Placed in first position on the 100 rich list is the founder of Zara, Amancio Ortega, who alone is worth €71 billion. The textile businessman’s fashion house Inditex is also home to brands Massimo Dutti and Pull & Bear.
Whilst much of his wealth was earned through fashion, Ortega has, over the years, invested in real estate and now boasts an extensive portfolio of properties located all over the world.
The top 100 people on the list are accumulatively worth €198 billion, the equivalent of 18% of the country’s GDP, an increase of 4.8% on last year, the Olive Press reports.
Following Ortega on the list is Mercadona’s Juan Roig who is worth €8 billion. There is such a vast gap of the amount of fortune between first and second position on the list, in fact Ortega’s wealth is worth more than the combined value of the next 23 positions.
Owner of construction business Ferrovial came third with a fortune amounting to €7.65 billion, followed by Ortega’s daughter, Sandra Ortega, who has a net worth of €7.6 billion. Keeping within the fashion industry Mango CEO Isak Andic came in at number five, with a fortune of €4.2 billion.
